Founders

THE FOUNDERS

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young educators: Mary Lou Allison Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin and Cubena McClure.

It's Mission: "To enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically."

Founder Mary Lou Allison Little would serve as acting Grand Basileus from 1922-1925 and go on to become the first elected Grand Basileus of the Sorority from 1925-1926.

On August 24, 1924, Sigma suffered a great loss when Founder Cubena McClure, a young talented artist who designed the Sorority pin, passed away.

The remaining Founders carried on and the group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University.

The sorority had its beginnings on the Irvington campus of Butler University. Today, a commemorative stained glass window is located just outside the tower room at the south end of Atherton Union, as well as decorative bricks on the right side of Atherton.*

In 1937, the Sorority became a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. It would be the only Sorority of NPHC to be founded on a predominantly white campus, rather than at a historically black college or university.

CHAPTER HISTORY

Soror Carrie Quander was a talented musician and a school teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1950, she paid a visit to the then Northeast Region Syntaktes, Soror Annie Neville, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. It was during this visit that Soror Quander conceived the idea of chartering a chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in Charlotte.

Filled with excitement and enthusiasm, Soror Quander returned to Charlotte with one goal in mind. On December 2, 1950, she would attain her goal. In a few short months, Soror Quander was able to garner the interest of fourteen other women and together they would charter the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter.

All fifteen Charter Members of the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter were school teachers.

Five years later, Beta Omicron Sigma would charter the first undergraduate chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho in Charlotte on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.

Signature Events

Odyssey of A Woman Awards and Scholarship Gala

Established in 2002, the Odyssey of A Woman Award was created to honor women who have served as role models in the community through their professional, academic, and philanthropic achievements and efforts. Each year the OWA Gala is held in March, which is also Women's History Month. During the evening, the winners of the "Hopie Perry - Lavenia Young" and Philo scholarships are recognized.

"Rhollin' on 22s" - Signature Sisterhood Series

"Rhollin' On 22's" is a series of events held on the 22nd of every month. which are geared towards giving members of the Sorority an opportunity to fellowship with one another in a social atmosphere. The events vary, but some are open to friends and family.

Rosette Cotillion

This biennial event is not just a pageant. The Rosette Cotillion is a journey taken by a select group of young ladies over a period of months. During this time, the Rosettes attend workshops that address topics, such as etiquette, self-esteem, relationships, and college preparation. They partipate in events designed to build character, nurture friendships among the Rosettes, and inspire a passion for service. Their journey culminates with their official presentation to society and the crowning of Miss Rosette and Miss Yellow Tea Rose.

Philo Affiliates

Since its inception, Sigma Gamma Rho has promoted unity among women and for years many alumnae chapters worked with individuals who were not members of Greek-lettered organizations. These women were organized into auxiliaries that had various names until the sorority officially approved the organized affiliate group and accepted the name of "Philo"(meaning Friend) as their official name.

The group was organized because the Sorority realized that there were women of the highest caliber living and working in their communities who did not have a four-year college degree. The Philo affiliate was a way of uniting these women and having them take part in such activities that would strengthen Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and improve civic and community conditions as well as work to help develop and support educational and cultural services among the sorority’'s youth affiliates.

The Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter Philos were reactivated in the Fall of 2002 with eight members.

Rhoer Club

A love for youth and the development of their full potential was the primary motivating factor that inspired Founder Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little to organize Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Young people today face challenges that could never have been imagined years ago, but such challenges provide the sorority with opportunites to carry on the vision of Little.

Rhoers are young girls organized on a local, regional and national level. The Rhoer affiliates are working to help other young people while they learn about their heritage and develop leadership skills. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to helping Rhoers to grow to be women of substance dedicated to service.

The Rhoer Club is open to young ladies ages 11-18, who are interested in education and demonstrate a commitment to community service.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is an invaluable network of professional women with a proud, rich history. We stand alone as the only Sorority of the National Pan-Hellenic Council to be founded on a predominantly-white campus during an era when prejudice and racism were rampant.

Though our members come from a broad spectrum of professions, we share a common belief in the importance of education established by our Seven Founders, who were all school teachers. Our National Projects address issues such as AIDS, teen pregnancy and violence, drug abuse, cancer awareness, poverty, fiscal security, and the continued struggles in Africa. We seek to educate ourselves and the members of our community on these ever-evolving issues so we can improve the quality of life within our society as a whole.

Sigma offers leadership training to all of its members at local, regional, and national conferences so they can become more effective leaders within the Sorority. However, this training can also translate into the workplace and other organizations improving a Soror's performance in all aspects of her life.

With over 500 chapters throughout the world, Sigma offers members a network of associates for social and professional connections wherever they may go.

Membership in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is by invitation only.

The minimum eligibility requirements to be a membership candidate at the graduate level are:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college/university

Additional factors considered, but not necessarily required:

Demonstrates community involvement by participating in service projects with the local chapter or independently

Holds membership in professional and/or service organizations

Membership candidates should demonstrate the following attributes:

Self-motivation

Tips for Pursuing Membership

The decision to pursue membership in any organization requires careful consideration and should not be taken lightly.

Membership into Sigma Gamma Rho is by INVITATION ONLY. However, here are some questions you can ask yourself and tips to help you make the correct decision for you.

BEFORE PURSUING MEMBERSHIP, ask yourself the following questions:

Why do I want to join a sorority?

What do I hope to gain from being a member of a sorority?

What can I contribute to the sorority?

Do I have the time available to be an active member of a sorority? WIll I be able to attend meetings, conferences, programs, and community service events?

Can I afford the financial commitment required to be an active member of a sorority?

Most sororities are very similar in certain aspects, however, they also differ in many ways. Thorough research will help you in deciding which organization will fulfill your needs and maximize your personal potential. Resources for information include:

Yellow Tea Rose Foundation

The Hopie Perry - Lavenia Young Scholarship

The Yellow Tea Rose Foundation of NC is a nonprofit charitable corporation founded in memory of Hopie Perry. Hopie Perry transferred to the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in 1952. Lavenia Young was initiated into the Sorority through the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter in 1953. Both women were dedicated members of the organization until their passing. It is in their memories and in their spirit of selfless giving that YTR offers these annual scholarships given to young ladies graduating from high school and currently attending a university/college. H3: It's All about Me - Healthy Choices, Healthy Living, Healthy Generations

Youth Symposium

The Sigma Youth Symposium is an initiative of Project Reassurance - the signature community service program of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Through Project Reassurance Sigma Gamma Rho seeks to promote responsible living for teens in today's world by focusing on prevention of teen pregnancy, personal decision-making, character building, promoting moral values, and making good health education choices.

The Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. invites young ladies ages 13-18 in the Charlotte and surrounding areas to join us on Saturday, March 10 from 10:00AM -3:00PM for our annual Youth Symposium on the campus of UNC-Charlotte. The theme is "H3: It's All about Me - Healthy Choices, Healthy Living, Healthy Generations."

This free event will include a career panel featuring women from the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and workshops that discuss each topic of the "H3" theme. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

The deadline to register is March 5, 2012 . Space is limited. Early registration is encouraged.
